In 2017, Whippoorwill Farm to Table CSA commissioned me for signage and artwork for their new store. This was a huge, intimidating project at the time as I did not have a lot of experience with painting illustrations. I learned a lot about colors, acrylic paints, dimensions and more. It was a lot of fun and I am grateful for the experience.
Below are a few pictures I was sent after the signage and artwork were mounted.
I was given a lot of free-reign for this project. The freedom was great but it threw some challenges my way that helped me grow as an artist. My process mainly involved sketching on paper which I cleaned up in Adobe Illustrator, then printed and traced onto the boards and painted.
A lot of the challenges I faced were based around color and technique which required a lot of research and self-teaching. However, as shown below, one challenge that was particularly frustrating was developing a consistent theme for the project. I had to find the right balance between creating cartoon-like and realistic illustrations and portray them consistently. In order accomplish that, I sometimes had to start all over or add/subtract elements from the painting.
I was grateful to be asked to do this project. It offered a lot of challenges, growth and, most importantly, it was FUN!
